COVID-19/Coronavirus

Facts and Figures

COVID-19 is the official name for the coronavirus disease 2019. It is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which had not previously been identified in humans. More than 680 million cases have been confirmed worldwide, and the disease has claimed over 6.8 million lives. The pandemic has put health systems under severe strain, but regulators have approved safe treatments, and countries have successfully rolled out vaccination programs. The virus appears here to stay, along with the threat of new variants sweeping the globe.

There has been an urgent need to accelerate the development of vaccines since the start of the pandemic. The World Health Organization reports that there are approximately 180 COVID-19 vaccine candidates in clinical development. National health regulators continue to authorize the use of vaccines. Pfizer and BioNTech worked together to develop one of the first to be approved.

However, it is critical to continue tracking genetic changes to ensure the virus is not mutating enough to resist vaccine-induced immunity. Since its emergence, Omicron represents the most-divergent variant of concern seen to date.
