Public sector net borrowing as a percentage of GDP in the UK 1920-2021
Public sector net borrowing amounted to 15 percent of gross domestic product in the United Kingdom in 2020/21, the highest it has been since the 1940s. After the end of the Second World War, government borrowing in the UK gradually fell, before a sharp increase is visible in the late 2000s at the time of the global financial crisis.
