Employment in cultural and leisure businesses operating during evening and night time hours was at just over three million in 2018. Leisure businesses operating as part of the night time economy include hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and more, and may also operate during the day time. Support activities to the sector, such as transportation and retail sales at markets and stores that also operate evening and night time hours, employed an additional 1.8 million.

This statistic has been calculated by Statista, following the Office for National Statistics (ONS) definition of the cultural and leisure activities segment of the Night Time Economy, using data from the Annual Business Survey for the UK non-financial business economy (ONS).

Night time cultural and leisure activities have been defined by the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) according to the Standard Industrial Classification (2007) as cultural and leisure industry sectors that operate in the evening or night. They may also operate during the daytime.
