Arable and cropland area in Chile

The land area devoted to agriculture in Chile has considerably decreased since 2000. In that year, an area of approximately 21.1 thousand square kilometers in the country was classified as arable land or occupied with permanent crops. In contrast, in 2016, the total arable and cropland area added up to 17.27 thousand square kilometers, a decrease of nearly 18 percent.

Permanent crops are those that occupy land for a long period and do not have to be planted for several years after each harvest (e.g. cocoa, coffee, rubber). Land under vines and trees and shrubs producing fruits, nuts and flowers, such as roses and jasmine, is so classified, as are nurseries (except those for forest trees, which should be classified under "forests and other wooded land")."
