Impact of the coronavirus on revenues of online gambling in Italy 2020, by sector
Due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, revenues of online gambling in Italy increased significantly in March 2020, compared to the previous year. Revenues of online poker tournaments more than doubled, rising from 7.2 million to over 16 million euros. Similarly, whereas online casino generated revenues for 72.6 million euros in March 2019, this figure rose to 94 million euros in March 2020. Conversely, sports betting (both online and retail betting) suffered the impact of the coronavirus, as all betting shops were closed and all sporting activities were suspended during the lockdown. This sector registered a turnover of roughly 71 million euros as of March 2020, losing over 35 million euros compared to March 2019.
