In 2021, the Philippines produced chicken that amounted to 1.74 million metric tons. In contrast, the dairy produced in the country during this year was approximately 26.3 thousand metric tons. Livestock and animal husbandry are part of the agricultural subsectors in the country.

COVID impact

The sustained growth of the livestock and poultry industry suffered tremendously due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Strict limitations on movement nationwide resulted in low volume of production across all product types. Both subsectors reported record contraction in its gross value added in 2020. Overall, the sector's production value in that year reflected a seven percent decrease compared to the previous year.

Environmental concerns

Despite the economic value of livestock industry, concerns of methane emissions are at the crux of discussions about the industry's harm to the environment. As of 2014, the methane emissions from agriculture farming were equivalent to over 40 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in the Philippines.
