Adults with multiple subscription television accounts in Australia Q1 2020
Disney Plus in Australia
Disney Plus launched in Australia in November 2019, and by the end of December that year had amassed over two million subscribers. The platform reached Australia shortly after its release in the United States, meaning that Australians were some of the first to contribute to Disney’s global subscriber base. By the end of Q1 2020, over 1.85 million Australians were subscribed to both Netflix and Disney Plus, significantly more than those who paired Disney Plus with Stan or Foxtel. Highlighted here is not only the popularity of Disney’s new SVoD offering among Australian consumers, but also the service’s impact on the market. Disney Plus is nothing if not disruptive as both Stan and Foxtel lost several hundred hours of Disney content post-Disney Plus launch, and has already drawn in more Australian subscribers than Amazon Prime Video. With a wealth of content and a competitive monthly subscription fee, Disney Plus could see more success in Australia in months and years to come.
Changes to the market
It is not only Disney Plus affecting the already relatively crowded Australian SVoD and pay TV industry, but also the rising competition between more established providers. Amazon Prime Video has been targeting Australia for some time, and in the space of just one year increased the number of content hours available to its Australian viewers by 84 percent. Meanwhile, Netflix’s volume of content hours grew by just 18 percent, and despite being the market leader, Netflix has very few Australian originals compared to those produced in other top ten international markets.
