Opinion on the use of Native American names by teams in the U.S. 2021
In North American sports culture, it is very common to give nicknames to professional teams that evoke folklore or local tradition. Teams often associate their image with animals and local symbols, some of which have been taken from Native American culture. Gradually, sports organizations have limited or removed these types of references as they are seen to evoke negative stereotypes of indigenous people. During a July 2021 survey, around 35 percent of respondents stated that the use of Native American names and imagery by sport teams was disrespectful to indigenous people in the United States.
