Expenditure of the French sovereign green bond by objective in 2019
In order to contribute to the financing of the energy transition, France, a country with an important place in the green bond market, and a key player on the issues of climate change and environmental protection, had launched the first French sovereign green bond. It is the "Green OAT 1.75% 25 June 2039", whose issuance volume amounted to seven billion euros.
The Framework for the Green OAT, which was issued on 24 January 2017, defines that expenditure must be addressed to one of the four following objectives : combating climate change (mitigation), adapting to climate change, protecting biodiversity and reducing pollution. Mitigation seemed to be the most important concern, since out of the 5.9 billion euros allocated in 2019, 54 percent had been devoted to the fight against climate change.
