Electricity generation Japan FY 2021, by source
In the fiscal year 2021, the electricity volume generated from natural gas in Japan amounted to approximately 355.8 billion kilowatt hours. Natural gas represented the largest energy source for electricity production. After the nuclear disaster in 2011, nuclear energy was replaced by fossil fuels. To be more independent of fossil fuel imports and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and electric power costs, Japan currently aims to replace fossil fuels with nuclear and renewable energy sources.
