
Share of CO2 emissions absorbed by land and ocean sinks by 2100, by scenario
As natural carbon sinks, land (forests and soil) and oceans help in regulating atmospheric CO2 emissions. While the amount of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions are rising, the proportion of sequestered carbon was estimated to be smaller in scenarios with higher emission. For instance, under very high greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scenario SSP5-8.5, the proportion of the cumulative anthropogenic CO2 emissions taken up by the land and ocean sinks in the year 2100 will be 38 percent, while rest of the CO2 emissions will remain in the atmosphere.
