Italy's largest importing industry is transportation equipment. In 2019, this sector accounted for 11.8 percent of all imports into Italy. Metals and metal products, excluding plant and machinery represented the second largest group of imported goods, with 10.5 percent, followed by mining and quarrying products. Overall, Italy has a positive trade balance by over 50 billion euros.
