From January to August 2020, about three billion hours in form of wage subsidies were paid in Italy. The months of April and May clearly recorded the largest amount of hours of wage subsidies, during the first COVID-19 lockdown. Wage subsidies are paid in Italy to those workers whose working activity has been suspended or reduced. The subsidies are paid by the Italian entities of social security.
