Between March and September 2020, about 320 thousand Italian families requested the COVID-19 special leave from work. The regions Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, and Lombardy recorded the highest number of requests. The COVID-19 emergency income is designed for parents who need to take care of their children at home for a period of 15 days. Generally, only one parent can benefits from this special leave at a time.
