From April 2021 to the conduction of this survey, when the second wave of coronavirus infections hit India, kirana and local shops in India experienced a slight decrease in the number of new users with only 97 percent of new users visiting. Modern trade saw an even sharper decrease with only 60 percent new customers. In the time between the two coronavirus waves, kirana stores saw an increase of new customers, while modern trade did not reach more than 90 percent of its original new customer upcoming.
India's retail market is dominated by local stores, so called kirana stores Modern trade has only a small share in the subcontinent's retail market.

The first wave includes the time from March 2020 to August 2020
The cooling off includes the time from October 2020 to March 2021
The second wave includes the time between April 2021 up to the time of the survey in May 2021.
The index is based on pre-COVID levels, being indexed as one. Values above indicate an increase of new customers, a value below one indicates a decrease of customers. (e.g. an index of 0.97 shows that out of 100 new customers only 97 reached out to a particular store)
