The electricity industry was the largest consumer of natural gas in Russia, having used 153 billion cubic meters of that fossil fuel in 2019. To compare, the population and the utilities sector consumed 83 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the same year. In total, the highest gas consumption over the observed period was recorded at 440 billion cubic meters in 2018.
