Over the past two decades, Russia decreased its carbon intensity, defined as energy-related CO₂ emissions per one U.S. dollar of gross domestic product (GDP), by 2.3 percent. In 2019, the country ratified the Paris Agreement, an international treaty on climate change signed in 2015. Between 2020 and 2021, however, Russia's carbon intensity increased by over three percent.
