In 2021, South Africa's largest coal mine was the Grootegeluk Mine, with a production volume of nearly 27 million metric tons that year. This was followed by the New Vaal Mine and the Wolvekrans Middelburg Complex Mine, which produced approximately 18.5 and 11.3 million metric tons of coal, respectively.
