The incumbent president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev won the presidential election in Kazakhstan held on November 20, 2022, with over 81 percent of the total votes, according to preliminary results as of November 21, 2022. The second largest share of votes was against all candidates, at nearly six percent. According to the Central Election Commission of Kazakhstan, the election's turnout stood at 69.44 percent as of November 20, 2022.

How long is a presidential term in Kazakhstan?

Prior to September 2022, the president of Kazakhstan could serve up to two terms of five years each. However, the legislation was changed in September 2022, reducing the maximum number of terms to one and extending the term duration to seven years starting from the next election. In other words, Tokayev could remain the president of the country until 2029 and no longer be a candidate for the post.
