Assisted care was the senior housing segment that grew the most in terms of number of units between 2000 and 2021. The largest not-for-profit senior housing organizations in the United States experienced an average annual growth in the number of assisted care units amounting to 3.5 percent during this period. Nevertheless, independent living was the largest senior housing segment, accounting for about half of the units.
