Countries in Africa 1990-2022, by regime type
28 of the countries in Africa were classified as electoral autocracies in 2022. Since 2018, there has been a decrease in the number of democracies in Africa, both liberal democracies and electoral democracies. Military coups in the West African countries Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso have caused democratic decline in these countries, but Sudan, Malawi, and the Central African Republic have also seen democratic backsliding in recent years.
