Between 2018 and 2022, the number of contemporary works of art sold at auctions worldwide for more than one million U.S. dollars totaled roughly three thousand. Over that period, paintings represented more than 80 percent of high-end contemporary art auction sales, with close to 2.5 thousand lots sold for over one million U.S. dollars.
