China: dog and cat meat consumption frequency in Yulin region 2023

According to a survey conducted in China in spring of 2023, almost 73 percent of surveyed Yulin region residents said they ate dog or cat meat once or several times a year. Less than four percent said that they had eaten dog or cat meat in the past, but do not eat it anymore.
Yulin city in Guangxi province of China is infamous for its annual Dog Meat Festival which draws a lot of criticism internationally as well as concerns about animal cruelty, dog thefts, etc.

Survey question:
How often do you eat dog or cat meat (if you said that you were not vegetarian in the previous question)?

Among the survey respondents, around 71 percent were between 18 and 45 years old;
51.5 percent were female;
around 29 percent had primary education, 34 percent had secondary or technical secondary school education, and 37 percent had higher education;
around 66 percent were from urban areas;
around 55 percent earned between 30 and 50 thousand yuan a year; 19 percent earned less than 30 thousand yuan.
