Final energy consumption of the transportation sector in the EU-27 1990-2021

The final energy consumption of the European Union's transportation sector was 274.8 million metric tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe) in 2021. The outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent restrictions on travel caused EU transportation energy consumption to drop 13 percent in 2020. Although energy consumption rebounded sharply in 2021, it remained well below pre-pandemic levels.
The transportation sector accounts for nearly 30 percent of final energy consumption in the EU.
