Primary energy consumption in the U.S. by sector 1975-2022
The electric power sector is the greatest consumer of primary energy in the United States, ahead of the transportation sector. In 2022, power utilities used 37.75 quadrillion British thermal units of primary energy, an increase compared to the previous years. Meanwhile, the transportation sector used 27.48 quadrillion British thermal units worth of primary energy such as oil used for motor fuels.
