In Portugal, the concession of residency permits for investors (ARI) during the considered period was the highest for citizens with Chinese origin, who accounted for over 5.4 thousand ARI. Brazil followed as the second most relevant country of origin of golden visa receivers, with over 1.2 thousand. The United States accounted for 781 golden visas granted by Portugal.

A so-called golden visa or residency permit for investors (ARI) is a permit for entry and residence in Portugal granted to foreign citizens who are not nationals of the European Union or are residents outside the Schengen Area, in exchange for a large financial investment, namely the acquisition of real estate, among others.

*In February 2022, the concession of golden visas to Russian citizens was suspended due to the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war. Therefore, data regarding golden visas granted to citizens from Russia is limited to the period between October 2012 and February 2022.
