Cleantech manufacturing and deployment capacities in Europe 2021-2022, by component
In 2022, the European Union (EU-27) installed 41.4 gigawatts (GW) of new solar PV capacity. However, EU manufacturers only produced 1.7 GW of wafers, 1.37 GW of cells, and 9.22 GW of modules that year. Had all this output been deployed in the EU, it would have only met a small amount of the bloc's solar deployment capacity needs. This shows the current limited scale of the EU's solar PV industry. By comparison, manufacturers produced 17 GW worth of onshore wind turbines in 2021, exceeding deployment capacity needs.
