Frozen pizza market: sales of the leading brands in the U.S. 2011-2017

This graph shows the sales of the leading frozen pizza brands of the United States from 2011 to 2017. DiGiorno, owned by Nestlé, was the top ranked frozen pizza brand of the United States with about 1.01 billion U.S. dollars worth of sales in 2017.

Frozen pizza market

Frozen pizza belongs to the frozen foods category. Frozen foods are industrially processed foods that are preserved through freezing. The storage temperature must be -18 degrees Celsius or less.

Early types of methods for freezing foods have been around since the 15th century, but the real start of the refrigeration industry has gone hand in hand with the invention of the refrigerating machine by Carl Linde in 1874. It took some more years until the first-ready-to-eat dinner had been invented during the 50's by Gerry Thomas, also known as the ‘TV-dinner’. It was aimed to be heated directly in the oven and then to be enjoyed in front of the TV.

Frozen pizza is carried in the retail aisle as round traditional pizza or in portion-size pieces. Time-strapped consumers are looking for convenient and affordable products that are ease of preparation when they purchase frozen pizza at a store. When they arrive at home after grocery shopping, they only have to preheat the oven, unwrap the pizza packaging and bake the frozen pizza in the stove.

Industry experts assume the category to grow in the next years with healthier options and consumer trends such as gluten-free products and products featuring natural or organic ingredients.
