This statistic shows the distribution of school principals in public and private elementary schools in the United States, according to the number of years teaching experience they had prior to becoming a principal as of the 2007/08 academic year. At this time, 17.6 percent of principals at all elementary schools had 20 years experience or more as a teacher before being promoted to principal.
