United States: DIY sales 2021, by store type

In 2021, DIY lumberyard sales in the United States amounted to just under 138 billion U.S. dollars, an increase compared to the previous year. Home centers generated approximately two and a half times that amount. Total sales of all three store types combined amounted to roughly 538 billion U.S. dollars.

The DIY market growth

DIY sales have been steadily growing, and are expected to continue rising in the next years. With restrictions put in place in an attempt to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic keeping people at home for longer and more often than usual, the DIY segment has only grown further. According to a survey conducted in the U.S. from March 2020 to June 2021, at least 60 percent of the people polled had started DIY projects in the previous month.

Major players

The Home Depot and Lowe’s are the largest home improvement retailers in the country, with the former’s sales amounting to over 132 billion U.S. dollars in 2020. Although considerably smaller in terms of sales and revenue, Ace Hardware was the leading home improvement store chain in the U.S. in 2021 according to consumer satisfaction. That same year, home centers were expected to make more than 288 billion U.S. dollars in the United States.
