Children and type 1 diabetes worldwide - key facts 2017 It is estimated that there are around 586 thousand children worldwide who have type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a condition in which the body cannot produce insulin, requiring people with the condition to take artificial insulin to stay alive. Unlike type 2 diabetes, developing type 1 diabetes is not associated with being overweight or obese. The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is not known, but genetics and exposure to viruses and other environmental factors are thought to play a role. Type 2 diabetes cases account for the vast majority of diabetes cases.
Type 1 diabetes treatment

The countries with the highest rates of type 1 diabetes among children and adolescents include Finland, Kuwait, Sweden, and Saudi Arabia. Treatment for diabetes type 1 includes eating healthy, exercising, monitoring blood sugar, and taking insulin. There are different types of insulin which can be injected or delivered through an insulin pump. The worldwide insulin treatment market is large and growing. By 2027 it is predicted that the market for insulin pens alone will be worth some 8.3 billion U.S. dollars.

Type 1 diabetes in the U.S.

Although the United States does not have the highest rate of type 1 diabetes among children and adolescents worldwide, it does have the highest number of children and adolescents with the condition. It is estimated that around .64 percent of male adults and .46 percent of females in the U.S. have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The prevalence of diagnosed type 1 diabetes in the U.S. increases slightly with age.
