In the United States, healthcare expenditures to treat diabetes came to some 380 billion U.S. dollars in 2021, while China, the country with the highest number of diabetics by far, spent some 165 billion U.S. dollars that year.
Prevalence among adults
In 2021, almost 14 percent of American adults among the 20 to 79 age group had diabetes mellitus, while roughly 13 percent of the adult Chinese population had the condition. Mexico, Turkey, and Spain had higher diabetes rates that year.
Future of diabetes
Around 10.5 percent of the global adult population suffered from diabetes mellitus in 2021. By 2045, the amount of people with the condition is set to increase by roughly 1.7 percent. By that year, China and India are expected to be the countries with the highest number of diabetic adults worldwide. China is projected to have a diabetic population of approximately 174 million people, while India is estimated to account for 125 million people.
