Brazil: sugar exports 2009-2020

Brazilian sugar exports amounted to 19.3 million metric tons in the 2019/2020 marketing year, a decrease of 1.5 percent from the 19.6 million tons exported a year earlier. This is also the lowest figure reported for the country in the decade.

Brazilian sugar in the global market

Brazil is by far the largest sugar exporter worldwide, having exported in the marketing year 2019/20 nearly twice as much as the runner-up, Thailand. In terms of value, the South American country’s sugar exports amounted to more than five billion U.S. dollars in 2019, down 20 percent in comparison to the previous year – a consequence of low international market prices. Algeria, Bangladesh, and Nigeria were the leading countries of destination for Brazilian sugar exports that year, accounting combined for almost one third of the export value.

Domestic sugar market

With the majority of the national sugar production directed towards the foreign market, sugar consumption in Brazil accounted for approximately one third of the country’s output in the 2019/2020 marketing year. In the refined sugar segment, local brands União and Caravelas had the highest penetration rate amongst Brazilian households in 2018. Nevertheless, in terms of revenue, the leading company in the Brazilian sugar sector was Copersucar, specialized in the distribution and logistics of this product, both domestically and abroad.
