European Union-28: sugar consumption volume forecast 2015-2027 Provisional numbers for 2017 put the amount of sugar consumed in the European Union (EU-28) at 18.5 million metric tons. Forecasts for future see a very slight dip. By 2027, it is expected that the overall consumption of sugar in the EU will drop to 17.9 million tons. This constitutes a change of approximately three percent.
Production

Sugar is obtained from sugar cane or beet by removing molasses from raw sugar in a refining process. The result of this process is white sugar. Brown sugar is deliberately coated with molasses or has residual molasses. Worldwide production of sugar reached 179 million metric tons in 2018/19.

Consumption in comparison

The common market of the EU is the second largest sugar market in the world. In 2018/19, it surpassed the Chinese market by almost three million tons. However, it paled in comparison to the Indian market, where 27.5 million tons were consumed. That puts EU consumption at a bit more than two thirds of Indian consumption. Global consumption added up to 174 million metric tons.
