Largest biotech companies in the world by market capitalization 2018 This statistic depicts the global top 10 biotechnology companies based on market capitalization as of late October 30, 2018 . At this point, Danish biopharmaceutical manufacturer Novo Nordisk was ranked third among such companies, with a market capitalization of around 81.4 billion U.S. dollars. Novo Nordisk also ranks among the top biotech companies by profit.
Global biotechnology

Gilead Sciences and Novo Nordisk are two of the largest biotechnology companies in the world. In June 2015, Gilead Sciences, a company based in the U.S., had a market capitalization of nearly 150 billion U.S. dollars, while Novo Nordisk had market capitalization of 144 billion U.S. dollars. As of 2012, there were 2,178 companies in the United States dedicated to biotechnology developments, and in comparison, Germany had 570 companies. Biotech companies located in Los Angeles and Orange County generated 20.3 billion U.S. dollars in revenue, while companies in New England generated almost 17 billion U.S. dollars in 2014.

In the United States, developments for medical biotechnology are a significant component of the biotech industry. Jobs in research, testing, and medical laboratories have increased significantly. Humira, an anti-inflamatory drug, was developed by AbbVie and has generated 12.5 billion U.S. dollars in revenue in 2014. The biopharmaceutical market is expected to continue to grow due to new innovations and the demand for quality medical technologies. Biotechnology is also commonly used in agriculture. Biotech crops in the United States accounts for more than half of the world’s total. With a total of 90.6 million acres of corn crops in the United States, only 6.3 million acres are considered non-biotech fields. Biotechnology also extends into the industrial sector, providing innovation for nanotechnology, enzymes, and biofuels.
