The Toyota Motor Corporation’s net revenue rose by over 15 percent year-on-year and grew to just under 31.4 trillion Japanese yen in the fiscal year ended March 2022. This figure is approximately equal to 257 billion U.S. dollars.
Demand slumps amid the pandemic
Toyota avoided troubles related to a shortage of chips in early 2021 and ended the fiscal year with a positive production outlook. The company's 2021 fiscal year ran from April 2020 through March 2021, meaning that the Coronavirus pandemic affected much of the previous fiscal year's business activity. During the 2021 fiscal year, demand for new Toyota vehicles slumped, and the automaker's performance in non-domestic Asian markets and North America was particularly poor.
Hopes for an American recovery
Toyota's motor vehicle sales amounted to some 10.5 million units between January and December 2021, a 10 percent increase from the previous year. Japan and North America are Toyota's largest regional markets. In 2020, North America was severely affected by the coronavirus outbreak in the United States, the largest market in North America. U.S. vehicle sales fell to around 14.5 million units in 2020. While the market started to recover in 2021, Toyota's sales still fell in the North American region. The Japanese brand faces stiff competition from national brands such as General Motors and Tesla.
