During the fiscal year ended March 2018, Toyota generated sales and revenue streams of around 29.4 trillion Japanese yen. Almost half of all Toyota vehicles worldwide were sold in Asia/Pacific or North America. In spite of recent problems with airbag inflators, the company managed to remain the most valuable car brand worldwide, beating out competitors such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Honda.

Toyota sold more than 10.4 million vehicles in FY 2018. Its main competitors include the Renault-Nissan alliance, Volkswagen and General Motors. Each company had sales close to the 10 million vehicle mark in 2017; the companies had a combined global market share of more than 20 percent. While Toyota had more than 369,000 employees in the same year, General Motors employed less people than its competitors: about 180,000 employees in 2017. The Volkswagen Group employed around 642,000 people worldwide in 2017.
