The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit the tourism sector hard in 2020, with countries worldwide implementing travel bans and safety measures to face the health crisis. As a result of the travel restrictions, the number of inbound visitors worldwide declined by nearly 73 percent in 2020 over the previous year, while the volume of global outbound travelers shrunk by 72.5 percent. As forecast, after a slight increase in 2021, the number of inbound and outbound travelers was expected to bounce back in 2022.
