The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit the tourism sector hard in 2020, with countries worldwide adopting stay-at-home measures to face the health crisis. As a result of the travel restrictions, the global number of inbound travelers went down sharply that year. In the Americas, the volume of inbound visitors declined by 68.4 percent in 2020 over the previous year, while it decreased by 68.1 percent in Europe. As forecast, after a slight increase across most regions in 2021, the global number of inbound travelers was expected to bounce back in 2022, especially in the Asia Pacific region.
