Major apple producing countries worldwide 2022/23

In the 2022/2023 crop year, China was the leading producer of apples worldwide. During that time period, China’s apple production amounted to about 44.5 million metric tons. The European Union came in second place with about 12.68 million metric tons of apples.

Global fruit production

The global production volume of fruit has been steadily increasing over the last two decades. Between 2010 and 2021, the volume of fruit produced worldwide grew from 750.5 million metric tons to about 910 million metric tons. China is the leading producer of fresh fruit by a large margin. The second leading producer of fruit, was India, followed by Brazil.

Apples in the U.S.

The United States produced some 5.5 million metric tons of apples in 2019, making apples the second most produced fruit in that country, behind grapes but ahead of oranges. Although there are dozens of varieties of apples available on the market, the most widely available variety in the United States is Red Delicious, followed by Gala apples. In 2017, Red Delicious inventories in the United States amounted to around 24.4 million cartons.
