Organic food market: leading countries 2021, based on sales

In 2021, the United States generated the largest revenue of organic food in the world with approximately 48.6 million euros. By contrast, the United Kingdom had a revenue of approximately 3.5 million euros.

What constitutes organic food can vary significantly depending on the country and certifier, but it often refers to crops grown without artificial pesticides, genetic modifications, or petroleum-based fertilizers. For meat, dairy, and eggs to be labelled as organic, the animals must be raised on organic feed, given adequate time outdoors, and not be fed growth hormones. In 2021, there were approximately 76.4 million hectares of organic farmland worldwide. In India alone there were almost1.6 million organic food producers, which amounts to at least five times more producers than in any other country.

Organic Food Worldwide

The worldwide sales of organic food have continuously increased between 1999 and 2021. In 2021, sales of organic food amounted to about 132.7 billion U.S. dollars, up from nearly 15 billion dollars in 1999. The United States accounts for 39 percent of the retail sales of organic food worldwide. The share of organic food sales in the United States has continuously been growing since 2008. In 2020, approximately six percent of total food sales in the United States were generated by organic food.
