Costa Coffee is a British multinational coffeehouse brand, operating stores in 29 international locations as of 2017 and ranking as the biggest coffee shop chain in the UK. Costa is also a leading player in the European coffeehouse market, with the highest number of coffee shop outlets in 2015 and highest number of units in Europe in 2016.
Owned by leisure and hospitality company Whitbread, Costa generated total revenues of 1.2 billion British pounds in 2016/17. This was a significant contribution to Whitbread’s total revenues which were reported in the same year to be 3.1 billion British pounds.
The prominence of Costa in the UK is also reflected in the number of consumers using the chain, with Costa ranking first for usage in 2015 compared to other coffee shop and sandwich bar brands. Awareness of Costa as a coffee brand is also high according to Statista’s Hot Drinks survey.
