Cashing in on caffeine: the rise in non-specialists
As the coffee culture in the UK grows, the options for grabbing a café latte on the go are increasing. More non-traditional vendors, such as pubs, fast food restaurants and supermarkets, are getting in on the trend by offering their own coffeehouse menus. The number of non-specialist outlets has already overtaken the number of branded coffee shops, although the big three coffee chains – Costa, Starbucks and Caffe Nero – are still going strong.
Costa Coffee as market leader
Costa Coffee is not the just the largest coffee chain in the United Kingdom, but the largest coffee chain across Europe, operating more stores than either Starbucks or McCafe. The United Kingdom is of course Costa Coffee’s largest market, however, the company also has a significant number of outlets operating around the world. China is home to the second-highest number of outlets outside the United Kingdom, ahead of the 100+ outlets operating in the United Arab Emirates.
