Iron ore mine production - U.S. 2014-2018 Iron ore production in the United States has undergone a period of decline in recent years. As of 2018 estimates suggest that there were just 49 metric tons of or produced in the U.S. This is a significant drop from the 2014 estimates of 56.1 tons. Iron ore is an important mineral substance that is used in the iron and steel industry.

Iron ore is mined in about 50 countries globally and is used almost exclusively to create steel. As of 2016 the region with the largest production of iron ore is Oceania, followed by South America. Despite seeing some decline in U.S. production, the global gross weight of iron ore production worldwide has been relatively stable in recent years.

Iron ore consumption has been on the decline in the U.S. in recent years. However, trade U.S. iron ore remains relatively stable. With some decline in recent years, the shipments of iron ore from the U.S. have recently begun to increase. The United States is still importing ore despite declining consumption in recent years. As of 2017, the majority of iron ore imports to the U.S. come from Canada.
