In 2021, there were some 176,000 people employed in the United States mining industry, excluding oil and gas extraction workers. This was a decrease of 16,000 employees compared to 2019.

Including oil and gas extraction and support activities for mining, the U.S. mining industry employed a total of 512,000 people in 2021.
