Industrial sand and gravel in the U.S.

Production of industrial sand and gravel may be very costly depending on the deposit and regulations that may protect the region it is located in. This material is produced in all 50 states of the United States. The production of industrial sand and gravel has gradually increased in the U.S. from about 27.5 million metric tons in 2009 to 120 million metric tons in 2018. Following the United States, The Netherlands and Turkey are the largest producers of industrial sand and gravel, producing 54 and 15 million metric tons, respectively, in the same year. The amount used in the U.S. was valued at 4.9 billion U.S. dollars in 2015, an increase from the 937 million U.S. dollars in 2008. Wisconsin is one of the largest sellers/users of industrial sand and gravel, with about 32.2 million metric tons in 2015. The U.S. also imports this material mostly from Canada.

About half of industrial sand and gravel is used for construction, the rest may be used for purposes such as concrete production, road construction, asphalt, and for icy roads in the winter. Crushed stone is an alternative that can be substituted for this sand and gravel in some cases.
