According to CDH Expert analytics firm, as of May 2014 there are more than 54,000 Mexican restaurants in operation in the U.S. This is approximately eight percent of the entire U.S. restaurant industry. Of the 54,000 Mexican restaurants 44 percent are considered to be limited service restaurants.

The largest Mexican restaurant chain is Taco Bell with a total of 5,769 restaurants in the U.S. The combined number of units for Chipotle, Qdoba, Del Taco and Moe’s Southwest Grill is less than half of this with a total of 3,280 restaurants between them. Founded in 1962, Taco Bell is now a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which also owns other well known QSR chains, such as KFC and Pizza Hut. Yum! Brands was ranked third in 2013 in terms of worldwide revenue amongst quick service restaurant chains after McDonalds and Subway.

Chipotle Mexican Grill has a total of 1,579 restaurants in the U.S - the second highest number of Mexican restaurants. The revenue of Chipotle has increased continuously from 1.1 billion U.S. dollars in 2007 to 4.1 billion U.S. dollars in 2014. The number of Chipotle restaurants worldwide has more than doubled in the period; from 704 restaurants in 2007 to 1,783 restaurants worldwide in 2014. A contributing factor to Chipotle’s success could be its commitment to use ethically sourced food.
