When asked if they have ever played any video or computer games, 80 percent of global respondents said that they have. More detailed surveys found, that in Canada, in 2014, 54 percent of the population over the age of six have played a video game in the past four weeks. In terms of digital games only, it was calculated that there were 22.34 million users of various categories of digital games in the country, including mobile, online and downloads, and that figure is predicted to grow by another six million by the end of 2020.

After a slight drop in 2013, the number of video game companies in Canada increased to 472 establishments in 2015. This includes some of the world-renowned developer names such as BioWare from Edmonton, Relic Entertainment, located in Vancouver, or Ontario’s Digital Extremes. As of 2015, the majority of employment in Canada’s video game industry was in large companies – some 89 percent. It was also calculated that Quebec had nearly double the number of full-time employees compared to British Columbia, which made it the leading province in terms of video game employment.

As of 2014, the digital games industry in the entire country was reported to generate revenues in the vicinity of 570 million U.S. dollars, out of which 203 million was attributed to online/browser games, 245 million to mobile games and 123 million to full version downloads. Additionally, it was found that in the same year console gaming was the segment which accounted for the largest share of revenue – 35 percent, while in terms of the share of revenue from selected genres, action and adventure games led the race, representing nearly 60 percent of the industry’s profits.
