Card payment value per capita in 28 countries in Europe 2000-2019

When compared against domestic population, the value of card payments in 2019 in the UK was over three times higher than in, for example, Germany. Indeed, Europe's largest economy had a relatively low value of payments done by card. On the other hand, countries like Luxembourg, Ireland and Belgium were found relatively high on the list. This is likely caused by either how dependent these countries are on cross-border e-commerce or, in the case of Luxembourg, by people travelling in and out of the country for work.
