Challenger banks vs the big five: return on equity in the UK 2012-2015 This statistic displays the return on equity (RoE) measure for United Kingdom's challenger banks and for large established banks, measured in 2012, 2014 and 2015. In that time, smaller challenger banks* outperformed both larger challengers as well as the Big Five banks. Smaller challengers registered a significant increase in the RoE ratio, achieving five percent in 2012 and growing to 15.8 percent in 2014 and 17 percent in 2015.
